Recently, the Delaware Department of Education (DDOE) issued a public notice announcing that the Bryan Allen Stevenson School of Excellence (BASSE) has been placed on a formal review related to enrollment, financial, and organizational operations. We want to provide our families and community with clear context, reassurance, and an update on how we are moving forward.
A formal review is a structured, state-led process used to ensure schools are meeting required benchmarks, identify areas for improvement, and offer guidance and support. Importantly, this designation does not indicate any immediate change to BASSE’s operations, nor does it impact our day-to-day instructional program. Teaching and learning are continuing as planned, relationships remain strong, and our students are being supported every day.
It is also important to understand how school funding works in Delaware. Like all public charter schools, BASSE receives funding based on student enrollment. This year, our enrollment came in lower than initially projected. While enrollment has remained stable throughout the year, the lower-than-expected numbers affected our operating budget and required staffing adjustments. These changes are a result of the state funding formula—not a reflection of the quality of education, care, or commitment of our staff and school community.
We are grateful to the Department of Education for the opportunity to participate in this review process. It allows us to provide context, share our story, respond to requested information, and continue strengthening our systems. The review will include public hearings and is expected to conclude later this spring. We have a clear plan moving forward that focuses on compliance, sustainability, and continued growth, while maintaining a safe, supportive, and high-quality learning environment for our students.
Even as we navigate this process, we are excited to share positive developments for our school community. BASSE has recently established two new partnerships:
- Apple will provide students with opportunities to explore careers in computer science, learn to code, design apps, and participate in a spring competition focused on solving a local community challenge.
- Children and Families First will offer wraparound, onsite therapeutic supports for our students and families.
